With huge advances in technology over the last couple of years, people have been talking about the robot uprising and speculating it to the same level has Y2K. Some people choose to ignore the advances in robotics and technology, saying that it’s still years away.
But is it really…
Now, some of you may be asking what this has to do with gaming, esports and Dota 2? Over the weekend, the 2018 Dota 2 champion team, OG, was bested by an artificial intelligence system, made by OpenAI, specially trained to play Dota 2 and is known as the OpenAI Five. The world champion team faced off against the system of bots in a best-of-three contest on Saturday, in a game that has been described as the highest demonstration of the OpenAI Five’s capabilities. The OpenAI Five have played two other competitive matches against world class teams, and narrowly lost both times.
The OpenAI Five were trained using the reinforcement learning technique. This technique is, basically, a trial and error approach which relies on the AI’s ability to learn from its mistakes and find improvements. The reinforce learning means that the AI were dropped in the game with zero understanding of it and had to teach itself the game in all its complexities, it was not coded to play.
The AI system has been around for 10 months and plays against itself in an accelerated environment to optimize learning. It has already logged 45 000 years of game time on Dota 2 and still hasn’t grown bored – Dota 2 creators secretly giving themselves high fives in the background.
On match day – OpenAI Five surprised the world champions by winning the first match with a display of aggressive tactics and spending in game currency early in the game to instantly revive fallen heroes. The second game demonstrated an even better performance by the OpenAI Five and gained an early advantage before ruthlessly advancing on the human players to snatch their second victory.
With such huge advances in just 10 months, the team at OpenAI have really taken a big win here! But, like a wise uncle once said, with great power comes great responsibility. What does the future look like with AI technology? Some great minds of our times, like Elon Musk, are completely against it and warn of possible repercussions while others have been seduced by the lure and promise of its endless possibilities.
Personally, I’m not sure what to expect or think of this. All I’m seeing is a bigger and better challenge to rise to in the world of gaming.
